New genetic engineering and sustainable agriculture – Between high expectations and complex risks

This discussion will be in german.

Climate change, biodiversity loss and resource scarcity require more environmentally friendly food production. At the same time, population growth and the situation of hunger and malnutrition in the world are pushing us to increase productivity. To overcome this apparent dilemma, the European Commission and the agricultural industry have high hopes for new genetic engineering methods such as CRISPR/Cas gene scissors. These modern breeding methods are intended to make agriculture more sustainable. However, environmental, consumer and ecological associations recognize immense risks for nature, health and the entire food supply. The debate about a possible deregulation of current genetic engineering legislation is in full swing at the political level. But how do young people assess these challenges? After all, it is about groundbreaking decisions for future generations. The organic farming working group invites you to an open exchange and discussion.
